if you refer to the cars you might have seen in the Miniatur Wunderland, they are home build based on the "Faller CarSystem" You find Faller products on their homepage. A description of the system can be found e.g. on this British modelers homepage. Googeling "Faller CarSystem" will give you hundreds of links.

It is fairly simple to take one of the standard Faller "start-sets" and move the motor, steering and batteries to a model car of your choice - parts of a bus will not fit in a scale mini cooper, though.

In the MiWuLa, the cars have build in microcontrollers which make them move as if on their own. This system has been developed by the MiWuLa and is not for sale.
