I visited the MiWuLa with some friends today and enjoyed it alot, even had one of your beautiful tours. The guide mentioned that at some time you had placed smoke detectors in short distance from another in order to detect fire or smouldering.
I guess that you probably have some temperature sensing as well?

Now here my real question: are you aware of (or possibly already use) the DTS temperature sensing system? (Disclaimer: This is not an advertisement for a specific company, this is about a technology). DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing) is a sensing system which might fit your purposes in an fitting way. I worked on one during my final thesis at the DESY here in Hamburg...

The nice thing about this system: it is essentially only a very long optic cable, possibly several hundred meters to several kilometers long. Combined with a sensing device attached to the fiber, one can tell the temperature at any spot of the fiber with a temperature accuracy of below 1K and a location accuracy along the fiber of approx. 25 cm.

These devices are commonly used for fire detection in big factory buildings or as leakage detection in pipelines. So one places them in a slalom like fashion or something or along routes where one is interested in the local temperatures....

The reason I thought this could be interesting for you is that it is a very robust system (with just one measurement device covering hundreds of measurement places instead of having to use hundreds of discreet temperature sensors) and fitting such fiber optic cables in already existing system is well possible (even beneath railway tracks should be fine...).

So just thought, perhaps you already use this, but if not, it might be of interest to you!
